Legend has it that the island of Paxos was created when Poseidon, God of the Sea, was looking for a romantic retreat to spend time with the alluring sea nymph Amphitrite. In his quest for perfection to impress the lovely Amphitrite, he threw his trident at the southern tip of Corfu and separated a tiny piece of land which now forms the beautiful island of Paxos. Although invaders have conquered and inhabited the island since ancient times, each has been captivated by the same beauty that first enchanted Poseidon, and each has left a legacy. The biggest influence on the landscape of Paxos is that of Venetians, who in the course of their four hundred year occupation shared the elegance of their culture and architecture, and cultivated the whole island with olive trees. These dense groves, filled with gnarled and ancient olive trees and scattered with traditional oil presses and hidden villages brought a prosperity to the island which made it an ideal target for the scavenging pirates who roamed the Mediterranean at the time. To protect family and treasures, the wealthiest Paxos families carefully chose the best positions to build their fortified homes. Built in 1750, Torri e Merli, once the home of the Papamarkos family, is one of the few remaining fortified manor houses on the island. The name Torri e Merli mirrors the architecture of the building and means Turrets and Crenellations. Torri e Merli can be found in the olive groves that lead down into the pretty fishing village of Lakka which hugs the coast and frames its turquoise bay. Torri e Merli boutique hotel caters to discerning guests. The natural landscape of one of the most beautiful islands in the Ionian Sea combines with Venetian architecture and fine decoration to create a bohemian chic as well as a romantic atmosphere of times past. We promise you a simply unique stay.
